How to Choose a Grill Size: Cooking Area, Burners and Space
Grill size is not just the width on the box. The right choice depends on how many people you cook for and how much space you have.
Start with how you cook
- Everyday cooking for a family: A mid-size grill with two to four burners is usually enough.
- Regular entertaining: Look for more cooking area and separate heat zones, so you can sear on one side and keep food warm on the other.
- Specialty cooking: If you want to use a rotisserie, an infrared burner or a side burner, check that the model includes it or offers it as an option.
Compare the cooking area, not just the width
Manufacturers list total cooking area in square inches, and some include a warming rack in that total. Compare the main grilling surface across models. Our product pages show the main and total cooking area where the manufacturer provides it.
Measure your space
- Footprint: Measure the width and depth including side shelves.
- Lid clearance: Allow room for the open lid above and behind the grill, and keep it clear of walls and overhangs as the manual requires.
- Working space: Leave counter or side-shelf room for platters and tools.
- Delivery path: Check the route from the curb to the final spot, since large grills ship by freight.
